Nurturing Emotional Wellness And Healing In Children

Individual Children's Counseling And Therapy

Kids are truly wonderful, and I love being a part of their journey. I enjoy helping them build coping skills for life’s challenges, managing changes, navigating feelings like worry or sadness, and supporting them to express their needs and handle behaviors in positive ways all while celebrating their unique strengths and personalities. Children often share that I am friendly, warm, and calm. My work often includes art and crafts, play, body movement, sand tray work, and other therapeutic games.

I deeply value supporting children and acknowledging the developmental stages they are at. I strive to thoughtfully pair appropriate forms of play, creativity, and activity to support them to have a positive experience in the therapeutic process. Tantrums, tears, fears, worries, anger, and big behaviors are all part of the journey. I enjoy sitting with clients as we acknowledge big feelings like determination, sass, stubbornness, and willfulness and explore how these qualities can become strengths.

What To Expect

The first therapy session (Intake) is usually for parents and caregivers only. It can be difficult for children to overhear hard things when meeting a new person. I will ask parents and caregivers to consider what you think is best for your child and together we will collaborate to see if children attending the intake is helpful.  This gives me a chance to learn about your child’s story, experiences, family dynamics, and what brings them to therapy so that I can create a plan tailored to their unique needs.

Your child typically joins in the second session where I can get to know them and they can meet and get to know me. I also like to identify what brings them to therapy and areas they would like to improve on with their parent(s) and or caregiver(s) to collaborate and form a unified team. It can be uncomfortable meeting a new person for the first time so I often let each individual child determine when they feel comfortable to meet with me one-on-one.

In the sessions to follow we focus on exploring thoughts and feelings, setting goals, and learning strategies to handle challenges. My goal is to support and encourage your child as they grow, providing a safe and welcoming space where they feel heard, understood, and respected. I strive to keep parent(s) and caregiver(s) informed and up to date on what their child is working on.

Sessions usually last 53 to 60 minutes, and how often we meet depends on your child’s needs and progress. Typically we meet weekly for the first 6-8 sessions and go from there.  Parenting guidance is also a common part of therapy, so children can get support in using their new coping strategies at home and in the community. Sometimes I may suggest small activities or “homework” to practice new skills between sessions.

Confidentiality is always a priority. Everything shared in therapy stays private, and I follow strict ethical guidelines to ensure trust and safety. My aim is to create a supportive space where your child and you feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and emotions while developing skills to thrive.
